Winning the battle but losing the war
One lesson I’ve learned - in life and markets - is to be mindful about winning battles that lead to losing the war.
In conventional education systems we are taught to win as often as possible and then we’ll emerge victorious.
But life isn’t so straightforward.
Not all conflicts are equally consequential and not all trophies are worth winning.
It is not uncommon for a small triumph to trigger a series of dominos that lead to catastrophe down the road.
So be thoughtful of tomorrow's sacrifices you make today in order to force a win.
Most likely, you need to lose some battles to win the war.
